2026 gTLD & dotBrand Applications: What You Need to Know

ICANN’s next round of gTLD and dotBrand applications is opening in 2026. Learn what these domains are, why they matter, and how your business can prepare.

Table of Content

ICANN has signalled that the next application window for new gTLDs (including dotBrands) is planned for Q2 2026. If your business is considering a custom top-level domain—either a community/industry gTLD or a branded TLD—now is the time to prepare.

What are gTLDs and dotBrands?

gTLDs are domain extensions beyond .com/.net/.org (e.g., .shop, .club). dotBrands are top-level domains operated by a single brand (e.g., .brand), offering tighter security controls, trust, and marketing flexibility.

Why this round matters

The last window opened over a decade ago. A new round means a rare chance to secure a namespace that strengthens brand protection, improves user trust, and enables innovative campaigns (short, memorable URLs, campaign microsites, verified email policies, etc.).

Now → Dec 2025: Follow the Draft Applicant Guidebook (AGB) process; final AGB expected by December 2025.

Through Nov 19, 2025: Applicant Support Program (ASP) open for qualifying applicants.

Dec 2025: ICANN to publish the list of successfully evaluated Registry Service Providers (RSPs).

April 2026 (target): Application window opens for 12–15 weeks (roughly April–July/August).

Concurrent with opening (April 2026): RSP Evaluation Program re-opens for additional providers.

How to prepare

Fit & strategy: Decide whether a dotBrand or a community/industry gTLD aligns with your brand, markets, and security needs.
Resources: Budget for application fees, technical operations, and ongoing registry obligations.
Partner selection: Identify an RSP early and align on SLAs/security (DNSSEC, abuse handling, email policies).
Roadmap: Build internal governance (naming policies, compliance, legal review) and a launch/rollout plan.
